Foreign visitors can now easily use WeChat Pay

Introduction

To encourage tourism to China, Tencent is simplifying the procedures for registering WeChat Pay accounts, making it easier for tourists to register than before.

Many procedures are being simplified by Tencent, and currently, registering a WeChat account is easier, as is linking international payment organization cards such as Visa, MasterCard, JCB, AMEX… with WeChat Pay, also known as (Weixin Pay), which is faster and easier. WeChat Pay is also intensifying cooperation with more foreign payment organizations to enhance the payment experience for tourists.

Currently, after downloading or updating the latest version of the WeChat app, overseas users can register a WeChat account using an international mobile phone number (any country/region code other than China’s +86), and either register a new account or log in with an existing WeChat account.

How to Link with WeChat Pay

To link WeChat Pay within the WeChat app, tourists need to enter their international card information to easily make payments when shopping in China, at tens of millions of stores, businesses, and even street vendors. The simplified card linking process allows international tourists to use money safely and will have spending limits if the foreign tourist has not verified their identity with a Passport.

For tourists wishing to increase their spending limit, they must complete an identity verification process by submitting relevant information. Passport verification is very quick. WeChat Pay will increase transaction limits for international tourists whose passports have been verified, with single transaction limits raised from 1,000 USD (25,500,000 VND) to 5,000 USD (127,000,000 VND) and annual total transaction limits raised from 10,000 USD (254,000,000 VND) to 50,000 USD (1,272,000,000 VND).

The number of foreign tourists visiting China is currently increasing rapidly, so promoting the use of mobile payments via WeChat Pay for tourists traveling in China is essential. The average daily transaction volume of WeChat Pay’s services has more than tripled, and the total number of average daily transactions has more than quadrupled. Spending on online services, shopping, dining, and travel is increasing sharply, with an average daily transaction amount of approximately 100 Chinese Yuan (350,000 VND).

Latest Updates

I have tried updating to the latest version. Previously, WeChat required a friend to scan a QR code for you to create a WeChat account, but now you can create a WeChat account and authenticate it through 03 methods:

  • Verification via your international payment card
  •

  • Verification via a friend by scanning a QR code
  •

  • Verification and activation of WeChat Pay for use after completing account registration.

And I have also just linked my international card and verified it with my Passport to WeChat Pay. When making payments, WeChat Pay will display a QR code and Barcode, from which funds will be directly deducted from your international card.

There are 2 ways to top up your WeChat Pay account: one is to have a Chinese domestic bank account to top up the WeChat Pay wallet, and the other is to ask someone else to transfer money from their WeChat Pay to your WeChat Pay wallet. You can choose the method that suits you best.

Tencent also recently launched a website – “Welcome to China, easy pay with Weixin Pay” which roughly translates to “Welcome to China, pay easier with WeChat Pay”. To learn more about how foreign tourists can use WeChat Pay, tourists can visit here for more details.
